well, i've used 50mm fixed lens with f 1,8, as to the light - it was early misty morning... well, yeah, i think that such frost on the objects appeared cos of the fog that was at night... try to catch such weather.
maybe you'd take gloves and tripod =)

Good plan =p I'll try my 50mm f1.4 and my macro. But as you said, I think its the weather that's the most important factor.
